Chelation Therapy & Holistic Health |
|||||||||||||
Chelation Therapy, is a treatment used as a safe, effective alternative to by-pass surgery for atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), uses the drug EDTA to cleanse the body of toxic substances. EDTA is administered intravenously, after being prescribed by a licensed physician.
At the Wellness Centre, the treatment is supervised by a team of professionals including a licensed physician and a Chelation nurse. Programs that provide education and support on physical and emotional issues related to heart disease are also available through the variety of health consultants who are part of the larger Wellness Centre Team.
EDTA (Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid) is an amino acid which has a strong attraction for certain toxic metals in the body. Some metals, such as lead, mercury and cadmium are poisonous, while all metals in excess are toxic.
As EDTA enters the blood stream, it collects and binds with these toxic substances. The resulting complex of "EDTA and Toxin" moves harmlessly through the blood stream until it is collected by the kidneys and excreted in the urine over the next few hours.
Through this process, EDTA normalizes the distribution of metals in the body and, as well, helps prevent the production of harmful, free-radicals (highly-destructive oxygen atoms). "Free-radical" damage is believed by many medical scientists to be an important underlying factor in the development of most illnesses of aging, including arteriosclerosis, cancer and diabetes. The belief is that removal of these toxins improves blood flow, which brings much needed nutrients and oxygen to organs and tissues, thus enhancing body functions.
Chelation benefits the entire circulatory system. Every blood vessel in the body, from the smallest capillaries deep in the brain, heart and other vital organs to the largest arteries (which are usually the only possible focus of surgical intervention) reap the benefits of this treatment. Often times, the smaller vessels are just as severely diseased and, yet, it is virtually impossible to repair these vessels by conventional surgery.
The person receiving Chelation experiences these changes generally as a reduction in symptoms, as well as improvement in the quality of life and feelings of overall well-being. Specifically, proven benefits have been seen in blood cholesterol, blood sugar, lung, kidney, heart and brain functioning, stickiness of blood platelets, walking distance and other indicators of improved circulation.
The extent of these positive changes varies with the number of treatments received and with the severity of the condition being treated. In studies involving many thousands of people, more than 75 % of Chelation patients have improved dramatically. More than 90% of patients receiving 35 or more treatments have benefited. Correcting diet, exercise and smoking habits have strengthened the improvement.
Our cozy Chelation room at the Wellness Centre accommodates ten people comfortably in easy chairs. Individuals experience very little discomfort. You can read, nap or chat with the other patients. If necessary, you can visit the restroom, being careful not to dislodge the needle attached to the intravenous infusion. A snack is served during the three hours that the treatment takes.
Many people take advantage of this opportunity to talk with our knowledgeable staff about aspects of nutrition and lifestyle that are vital to insuring the lasting effects of Chelation Therapy. Our Chelation nurse, who has had advanced education in this area, will also provide short, introductory teaching sessions on a variety of these topics during the course of treatment.
At the Wellness Centre, we have been offering Chelation Therapy since 1992 without any harmful effects. In fact, Chelation is among the safest of medical procedures - safe enough to be given to infants and children. EDTA has one of the best safety records of any medication used in the U.S. In the past 40 years, over 400,000 patients have received more than four million treatments. In all of these properly-administered treatments, not one death has occurred that was directly related to Chelation.
As with all medical procedures for heart disease, there are side effects to be considered. As the drug is excreted by the kidney, kidney function must be monitored from time to time. Most people record improvement in kidney function, but about one percent may lose some kidney function. This will return to normal once recognized by testing and appropriate adjustment of therapy has been made.
Mild irritation at the intravenous site and fatigue may occur. These and other minor side effects are easily controlled by adjusting the rate of intravenous flow, the frequency of treatments, or other simple measures. Compared to other medications and surgical procedures, the risks associated with Chelation Therapy are extremely low. Most patients experience few or no side effects and routinely drive themselves home after treatment with no difficulty.
By-pass surgery is a surgical procedure focused on repairing a very specific portion of the blood circulatory system. Restricted segments of major coronary arteries of the heart are bypassed with grafts taken from the patient's leg veins. Bypassing only a portion of the blood vessels has its limitations and has no real effect on reversing arteriosclerosis, a system-wide problem. Chelation Therapy, in distinct contrast to by-pass surgery, improves the functioning of the entire circulatory system, impacting on large and small blood vessels.
Chelation Therapy is compatible with by-pass surgery and other conventional treatments, including medication and 'balloon' procedures. In fact, it is often chosen by patients who have undergone one or more by-pass or 'balloon" procedures. Most drug treatments can be continued without adjustment until the need for them changes. Your Chelation physician can advise you on this in consultation with your personal physician as needed.
Over a period of time, Chelation halts the progress of free-radical damage and normal blood flow is restored throughout the heart and circulatory system. Because of changes in vital processes in the body, you will experience reduction or elimination of symptoms. Improvements in stress test results are the norm. Family and friends are often the first to become aware of improvements in appearance, behaviour and performance.
Thirty treatments is the average number required for optimum benefits in patients with symptoms of arterial blockage. People can choose to be treated once to three times weekly, since most times treatment is available daily, Monday to Friday. You can expect to pay approximately $110 for a three-hour treatment. MCP does not pay for Chelation Therapy. At the present time, only a few insurance companies will pay for Chelation Therapy please check with yours to verify. Receipts can be provided and are eligible for income tax deductions.
The Holistic Heart Wellness Program at the Wellness Centre includes Chelation Therapy plus the nutritional/lifestyle choices that enhance the effects of EDTA and interrupts the cycle of free-radical damage. These powerful lifestyle choices that promote Holistic Heart Wellness include a 'heart-healthy' diet, regular exercise, vitamin and mineral supplementation and effective stress management (including an elimination of smoking and excessive alcohol use). This is the part of the program in which your motivation to improve your health is honored and nurtured and will have long-lasting effects. All of these factors have their own unique and significant impact on your health status.
If you have been told you have heart or circulatory disease, it is vital that you learn about your illness and all possible treatment choices so that you may make an informed decision.
Chelation Therapy is a long-established technique that is rapidly gaining recognition by the general public as a successful treatment for heart disease. It is certainly worthy of your serious consideration.
Should you choose Chelation Therapy and be one of the small number of patients who are not successfully helped, surgery still remains an option for you. People often take advantage of the waiting time for bypass surgery to try Chelation Therapy, most often finding that surgery is then unnecessary.
